History of the Wheel

From ancient Athenian sortition to modern PRNG digital wheels.

1. Ancient Greece — The Kleroterion

The earliest recorded randomization device for decision-making was the kleroterion, used in ancient Athens around 400 BCE. It was a stone slab with slots that randomly allocated government positions to citizens, ensuring no corruption or bias.

2. Medieval Europe — Rota Fortunae

In medieval Europe, philosopher Boethius described the Rota Fortunae (Wheel of Fortune) in his 524 AD work The Consolation of Philosophy. This metaphorical wheel represented the random turning of fate.

3. Pascal & Probability (1654)

Blaise Pascal's mathematical correspondence with Fermat in 1654 established the foundations of probability theory, directly influenced by roulette wheel experiments.

4. Modern Digital Decision Wheels

Today, browser-based tools like GameWheelClub replace physical friction with cryptographic pseudorandom number generators (PRNGs), rendering high-resolution canvas graphics in real-time.
